-Open type-
With open source websites you can create work for free. one of the most popular open source websites is font forge. This website allows you create you own font family and original style. the only issues with this type of open source that these fonts can be created they will not be web safe as google font's and will not work on websites.
-Workshop with Dave Crossland-
Dave Crossland is a programme consultant at Google Web Fonts, commissioner for new type face designed for the web. Dave Graduated from Ravensbourne College, where he studied the BA Interaction Design programme. He then graduated from University of Reading’s MA Typeface Design. He has great knowledge about font design and even the use of open source.
For the workshop we started of drawing the letter "o" & "n' on a A4 piece of paper he told us to just do a simple outline drawing.
For the next stage we then had to draw the letters again but think about the area of the letters.
Our thrid drawing was to focus on proportions and contrast. He suggested we used the pencil lightly until we was happy with the proportions.
Dave Taught us the four main principles to consider when creating font this is the phrase "crap"
C

R

A

P
-contrast

-repetition

-alignment

-proportions
- TASK ONE -
- TASK TWO -
We then went onto the open source sofeware "font forge" where we took our hand drawn designs onto the computer.Dave guided us through the process & we achieved our own font that can be used in indesign but not on the web.

**OWN WORK**
For my own exploration i decided to use my initials and create my own font.I sketched a few ideas and slowly built up the design.I then went onto font forge and played around

I found the letter "K" was easy to create as it mainly blocks and straight structure. However the videos shows i have difficulty creating the "R" The round edges are simple to construct it just clicking links and point and moving them. This is where i think i need to mainly improve, just need to get more basic understand of editing points and adding them in.

i need more practice but i have defiantly learnt a new method of creating type. i like that in font forge you can create a whole Alphabet and make them have a spacing thats universal to each letter. its a quick way to editing a family of type.
